Depth Assessment and Review

A closer view of one important partner relationship

An important partner relationship can look straightforward at review level while becoming much harder to understand underneath. The headline numbers may still look reasonable and both organisations may remain committed, yet the people in delivery, sales, operations and governance can be experiencing something quite different.

Depth examines one relationship properly before you decide what it needs next.

The reason for looking closer

Strategic relationships rarely stand still. Scope grows, people move, priorities change and new dependencies develop, and teams adjust along the way to keep things working. The relationship may remain valuable while the evidence used to oversee it falls behind.

A closer look is useful when:

  • A renewal, investment or expansion decision is approaching.
  • The relationship is described as strategic, but that judgement has not been tested recently.
  • Reported performance does not match the experience of the people involved.
  • An escalation has raised questions that existing reporting cannot answer.
  • Different teams hold different views of how well the relationship is working.

None of this assumes the relationship is failing. It means the next decision needs a more current view.

How Depth works

It starts with the decision you need to make and work back to the evidence it requires. Relevant people from your organisation and from the partner then assess the relationship against the same criteria, which can include strategic fit, commercial value, governance, delivery, capability, communication, investment and accountability.

Bringing those responses together shows where the evidence agrees and where experience of the relationship differs. A difference does not mean something is wrong. It shows where the relationship needs to be better understood.

What the review tells you

The review shows:

  • Whether both organisations understand the relationship in the same way.
  • Whether strategic expectations are reflected in day-to-day delivery.
  • Where the relationship is working well and needs no further intervention.
  • Where internal teams or the partner see things differently.
  • Whether current investment is still justified.
  • What should be resolved before the next significant decision.

You receive a decision brief, a comparison of the perspectives involved, clear priorities and a baseline against which to measure future change.

A clearer basis for the next decision

Depth supports a real relationship decision. That might mean continuing to invest, changing the support around the relationship, addressing a specific weakness, resetting expectations or reconsidering the current approach.

This is not another partner review. It establishes what the available evidence supports now.

Starting the conversation

Depth takes one relationship, brings the relevant perspectives from both organisations together and shows where they agree and where they differ. You receive a decision brief, clear priorities and a baseline, so the next decision rests on current evidence.

If a relationship in your portfolio has reached that point, the first step is a conversation. I will ask about the decision you are facing and what you already know, and help you judge whether a closer look is warranted.
