Internal Teams Not Aligned Around Alliances.
Most organisations don't lack opinions about a partnership. They lack a shared one. Sales may see a partner as a route to revenue, delivery may see it as a source of friction, and product may barely know it exists, each view formed independently, each reasonable from where it sits.
Misalignment rarely surfaces as open conflict. It shows up as a partner meeting where two internal teams give the partner contradictory instructions, a deal that stalls because nobody agreed who owns the commercial terms, or a delivery issue that surprises sales because nobody told them it was happening. Ask three people from different functions what this alliance is for, and see how closely the answers match.
The risk isn't that any one team is wrong. It's that the partner experiences an organisation that doesn't agree with itself, and starts making decisions based on whichever internal voice is loudest, not the one with the most authority.
Signs this is happening
- Different functions could give materially different answers to "what is this partnership for"
- The partner has received conflicting instructions or priorities from different parts of your organisation
- Decisions about the alliance get revisited because the wrong internal stakeholder wasn't consulted
- There's no shared, current view of who owns which part of the relationship
This condition is frequently paired with alliance strategy has drifted, since a strategy nobody's revisited is usually a strategy nobody's aligned around either.
Addressed early, this is a straightforward fix: a shared statement of purpose and clear ownership across functions. Left unexamined, it's the reason partners quietly start managing your organisation rather than the other way round.
This is a Structural condition within the Alliance Oversight Gap framework. The Baseline Assessment tests whether internal stakeholders hold a shared, current view of the alliance's purpose and ownership, or a set of independently reasonable but conflicting ones.
This is one of five areas the Gap Detector Assessment measures. Find out where you stand.
